Maggiano’s Celebrates National Martini Day

Written on June 19, 2013

Happy National Dry Martini Day! Regarded as possibly one of the most fashionable drinks in film and culture, the martini first appeared in the mid-1800s. It is likely derived from the Martinez, which included sweet vermouth, gin, bitters and maraschino liqueur. The drink morphed into the martini when its ingredients were simplified into vermouth and gin only.

The dry martini grew in popularity due to the higher gin to less vermouth ratio. The “wetness” or “dryness” of a martini is based on how much vermouth is used in the formula: the less vermouth, the drier the drink, and the “better” the quality of the cocktail. You can make a delicious martini, too!

Ingredients
1 2/3 oz gin
1/3 oz dry vermouth
1 olive

Instructions
Stir gin and vermouth with ice in a mixing glass.
Strain into a cocktail glass, add the olive, and serve in a stemmed cocktail glass.
